Special Details Unit

In 2016, Sheriff Scarbrough re-organized the Court Division, Transport Division and the Civil Process Division under one command and established the Special Details Unit. The Special Details Unit is responsible for several duties that fall under the Sheriff’s authority and has been tasked with extra assignments as needed.

The primary responsibility is to provide security and courtroom services at the four Tift County Court facilities: the Tift County Courthouse, the Tift County Administrative Building, the Michael Cantlebary Juvenile Court Center and the Tift County Law Enforcement Center.

The deputies provide security for Superior Court, State Court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court and Juvenile Court. Deputies are stationed in each courtroom when a court is in session. In addition to courtroom security, these deputies are responsible for the security of county facilities and maintain security checkpoints to screen individuals needing access.

The second duty of these deputies is inmate transportation. Yearly, there are approximately 700-800 transports completed with some being out-of-state assignments. Transportation can consist of court hearings, medical appointments, mental health evaluations, and transfers to other facilities.

The third duty is Civil Process. There is civil paperwork generated in each court that must be served to parties involved daily. In order for court cases to proceed, civil paperwork is the first step in the process of the judicial system and must be completed in a timely manner, which the deputies travel throughout the county insuring this is done.

Besides the three main duties, these deputies have been tasked with providing security for all county government meetings, special events and county school student crossings as well as any needs of the Sheriff.

In rare occasions that there is no court in session, transports or civil process, these deputies perform duties inside the jail or patrol the county.
